Sheriff Dave Mahoney is suggesting a new jail downtown could cost as much as $120 million, but the city could bring the cost closer to $100 million if it builds away from downtown instead of expanding the current jail.

The new facility would require fewer employees and consolidate services that are currently stretched between downtown’s public safety building, the City-County Building, and the Ferris Huber center on Rimrock Road. Specific cost projections are expected by December.
