A new bill would enter Wisconsin into a multistate licensure compact aimed at reducing employment barriers for cosmetology professionals seeking work in the state, according to WisBusiness. The legislation would ratify and enter Wisconsin into the Cosmetology Licensure Compact, a federally sponsored initiative that became active last week.

The bill’s authors say it will “improve licensing efficiency and workforce mobility” while retaining states’ abilities to control their own regulatory standards. It would make it easier for cosmetologists to practice across state lines in participating areas, no longer requiring them to obtain multiple licenses to do so.

Instead, they can apply for a multistate license to practice in other compact states, provided they have an active, “unencumbered” license in a member state.
