City officials will rebid a renovation plan for the Madison Municipal Building after the two bids received were deemed too high, according to a story in the Wisconsin State Journal.

A bid from Miron Construction came in at $29.6 million, while one from Tri-North Builders totaled $32 million.

Reportedly, the city had budgeted $20 million for construction, and $10 million for design, staff time, and environmental remediation including asbestos removal, but the entire project did not receive much interest from contractors. One idea being floated is to break the renovation into smaller projects to attract more contractors.

Last November, about 200 workers and several offices were moved out of the building into leased space, so any construction delays will mean higher leasing costs.
