The re-bid process for renovation of the Madison Municipal Building downtown has resulted in two ballpark bids.

J.P. Cullen & Sons submitted an $18.2 million base bid, plus another $502,000 to cover some replacement windows and a green surface on a lower roof. Miron Construction submitted a $20.25 million base bid plus $522,000 for the window replacements and the roof.

Masonry restoration was trimmed back and an audiovisual package was removed, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

The city had budgeted $20.3 million for construction on the 1920s-era building plus $10 million more for other remediation and fees, but initial bids surpassed that level by as much as $12 million, causing the city to pause and ask for the re-bid.

Bids for remaining window replacements are expected soon. Additional masonry repairs and the audiovisual package could be done later.

The Board of Public Works will consider the new bids on May 3, and the City Council is expected to make a decision on May 16.
