The Goodman Community Center’s finances are under Madison Police Department (MPD) investigation after the nonprofit reportedly “discovered financial inconsistencies and impropriety,” according to The Capital Times.
President and Executive Director Letesha Nelson said the organization turned over the information to law enforcement and is “cooperating fully with their ongoing investigation,” in addition to retaining a forensic accounting firm. The nonprofit has also made internal changes to “ensure that the integrity and security of [its] finances is protected moving forward.”
Founded in 1954, the Goodman Community Center, located at 214 Waubesa St., provides fitness classes, youth programming, events, and food pantry services. It reported net assets totaling $15.7 million and 248 employees as of 2022. An annual report for the fiscal year ending in August 2023 showed the organization serving thousands of people, increasing its adult program participation by 50%, and launching a living wage initiative offering employees a $20 per hour minimum.
Roughly 42% of the nonprofit’s funding came from donations and other contributions, the annual report said. The organization also received funding from government grants and foundations.
