The Madison Police Department (MPD) is among several law enforcement agencies that have been awarded grants from the Wisconsin Department of Health Service (DHS) to focus on opioid prevention and intervention, according to WMTV15.
The grants support projects to prevent and reduce opioid use such as community drug disposal systems that help prevent those with an opioid use disorder from going to jail. MPD received $183,511 for similar programming.
Other recipients include the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, awarded $400,000, and the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, awarded $328,676.
Wisconsin is expected to receive almost $750 million through 2038 due to national litigation against the pharmaceutical industry, and 30% of those funds are for DHS-managed state government projects. The remainder is set aside for local needs.
DHS received $31 million in 2022 and set aside $3 million for law enforcement agencies. All Wisconsin law enforcement agencies were eligible to apply for funding.
