On Tuesday, employees at two additional Starbucks establishments in the Madison area filed for union elections, marking a significant moment in the company’s history with the largest one-day filing across the nation, according to a report from The Capital Times.

The Madison store situated at 2157 Rimrock Road and the Monona store located at 6512 Monona Drive are poised to become the fourth and fifth Starbucks locations in Dane County to undergo union elections. Notably, in 2022, the Capitol Square store overwhelmingly voted to join Workers United, the same union representing nearly 400 unionized Starbucks outlets in the United States. Following suit, the State Street store joined last May.

According to the union, 13 employees at the Monona store and 17 at the Rimrock store are eligible to join the union.

In response to these developments, Starbucks spokesperson Andrew Trull emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring all partners at petitioning stores are well-informed and able to voice their opinions through the requested union elections.

However, the company faces legal challenges, with over 700 unfair labor practice charges filed against it, including allegations of refusing to negotiate and closing more than 20 unionized stores. Notably, the U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear a case this year regarding whether the National Labor Relations Board can compel the company to reinstate workers purportedly terminated due to union organizing efforts.
