As soon as the first half of 2016, Monsanto Co. plans to close its research and development operations in Middleton at 8520 University Green.

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, 40 employees work at the Middleton facility. A company news release said as many as half of those jobs will relocate to St. Louis, while the rest will be permanently cut.

Monsanto is making the move to consolidate its R&D efforts in one location. Its Connecticut and North Carolina R&D facilities were also impacted by the cuts.

Employees at the Middleton facility will receive a severance package including a separation payment, extended benefits coverage, benefits planning, educational/financial assistance, and career outplacement services, the State Journal reported.
