The Monona Community Festival, a beloved Fourth of July celebration, will hold its final event this year, ending after its events on July 3-4, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The decision comes due to new city fees and a decline in volunteer participation.
The city of Monona has introduced charges for staff time and equipment, estimated at $18,500 for this year, with projections for next year reaching at least $21,500. The core group of volunteers has also decreased from over 20 to fewer than seven in recent years.
This year’s festival includes live music, carnival rides, team trivia, and a cornhole competition on July 3 from 11 a.m. to midnight. On July 4, it runs from 9 a.m. to midnight, featuring music, an art fair, a classic car show, drag bingo, and fireworks at 9:20 p.m. Food carts, carnival snacks, and beverages will be available throughout.
