A six-month ban on new vape shops has been imposed in the city of Monona, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The news follows the opening of three shops in recent years — Ignite Glass and Gifts at 6009 Monona Drive, Vapes and Cigars at 6325 Monona Drive, and Monona Vapor at 2403 W. Broadway — and the city’s rejection of a fourth after the police chief voiced concerns about its proximity to schools.

The City Council passed the 180-day moratorium on new electronic smoking retailers on May 6, and the city will be looking into potential zoning code changes. Last year, the city of Milwaukee changed its zoning regulations to prohibit the opening of e-cigarette or tobacco retailers within 500 feet of similar businesses or 1,000 feet of schools.

The Monona moratorium applies only to stores where vaping supplies represent 10% of stock or floor space.
