The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) has announced that next year it will add several new classrooms to its full-day 4-year-old kindergarten program, The Capital Times reports. The expansion plan follows voters’ November approval of a combined $607 million in referendums toward building and operating costs, and the district’s promise to spend some of the additional property taxes on additional 4K options.
The plan will add six all-day 4K classes at Stephens, Lincoln and Elvehjem elementary schools on the west, south and east sides of Madison, respectively. MMSD would spend more than $1 million to hire the equivalent of 10 full-time staff for the 4K program.
School board members are set to vote on the district’s preliminary budget in June. MMSD will offer 40 full-day sections in total next year — compared to 33 this year — and 16 of the district’s 32 elementary schools will offer all-day classes.
