Madison taxpayers could be asked for over $600 million this November through two referendums that would fund ongoing operational expenses and renovations to buildings in the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
The school board is expected later this month to approve two referendum questions for the November ballot — one asking for $100 million in a recurring, operational referendum (which would be broken into smaller pieces and implemented gradually over the next four school years), and another requesting up to $507 million to pay for school upgrades.
The board will meet tonight for a discussion on the questions’ proposed wording and amounts. A board vote is set for June 24. If both measures pass, residents’ estimated tax impact will be as follows:
Operational referendum:

2024–25 — $316.72 increase;

2025–26 — $315.49 increase;

2026–27 — $209.1 increase;

2027–28 — $208.28 increase; and

A total increase of $1,049.58 in property tax bills by 2028.
Facilities referendum:
