The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) reached a tentative agreement to a 2.06% raise for teachers and staff, plus another 2.06% added if a $100 million operating referendum passes this November, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The news follows months of negotiations after district officials initially proposed a wage freeze in March but is only half of the 4.12% raise Madison Teachers Inc. (MTI) asked for.
On the Nov. 5 ballot, the district will seek voter approval of two referenda: a $507 million capital referendum that would fund new and updated schools, and a $100 million referendum to cover the school district’s operational costs — including wages.
If the latter passes and teachers receive the full 4.12% raise they requested, the total budget impact would be $13.3 million. The increase is on top of raises awarded based on level of education and years of experience.
The deal will go before the school board for approval on Sept. 30.
