The Madison Metropolitan School District is hosting two community information sessions on the first phase of its voter-approved facilities referendum projects tonight, Oct. 14, and Thursday, Oct. 16.
The district will share updates and gather feedback, and highlight site plans for Samuel Gompers Elementary School/Black Hawk Middle School and Sherman Middle School/Malcolm Shabazz City High School. These are the first buildings planned for construction under the 2024 referendum.
Tonight’s event, focused on Gompers and Black Hawk, will take place from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Black Hawk Middle School Library, 1402 Wyoming Way.
Thursday’s event, focused on Sherman and Shabazz, is at 5:30-7 p.m. at the Sherman Middle School Library, 1610 Ruskin St.
“Each session will feature a presentation from the district’s design and construction team, opportunities for open discussion and time for attendees to share input and ask questions. Child care, light snacks and interpretation in Spanish, Hmong and American Sign Language will be available on site,” according to a news release.
“These sessions are a chance for Madison residents to hear directly from the design team about each project’s progress,” Edell Fiedler, MMSD’s senior executive director of communications, said in a statement. “Our goal is to keep families informed and engaged as we continue creating modern, welcoming school environments that reflect the needs and priorities of our community.”
Phase 1 projects are on track to break ground in late winter or early spring of 2026. Both projects will replace existing facilities. Sessions for phase 2 projects will follow later this fall.
