The Madison Metropolitan School district has proposed changes for 20 elementary schools and is eying the construction of another elementary school in an effort to alleviate overcrowding, according to the first draft of the district’s new attendance area maps, the Cap Times reports.

District officials also said a property tax referendum may be necessary to build the new school, which could spur higher property taxes.

On the district’s far east side, the draft maps lay out the possible construction of an elementary school at MMSD’s Sprecher Road property. The facility would take over a large portion of Kennedy Elementary’s current attendance area and some of Elvehjem Elementary’s as well.

District administrators plan to bring at least two more drafts of the proposal to the community for feedback before issuing a recommended plan to the school board, which is scheduled to vote on new maps in February 2027.

So far, the district has looked only at elementary school boundaries and will reportedly propose changes to middle and high school boundaries this fall.
