Fewer students are expected to walk through the halls of Madison Metropolitan School District high schools in the next school year.
According to a Wisconsin State Journal report, a decline of about 400 students is expected in high schools for the 2026-2027 school year. Because of the reduced number, the district will have to reduce staffing.
However, student numbers in middle schools are expected to grow.
This year’s number of students enrolled in the entire district represents a .5% drop from the previous year, with 25,029 attending schools instead of 25,155.
A decrease in students in schools is a statewide trend that has been consistent over the previous five years.
