The Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) is moving into the “execution” phase of projects to create new or upgraded schools after voters passed a $507 million referendum, the Wisconsin State Journal reports. Architects have toured every school set to get a major renovation or new building over the next five years.

The board will vote on a contract with a construction company later this month, and meetings with building principals and the public regarding projects’ design are scheduled for February and March.

MMSD’s new buildings will feature larger cafeterias and libraries, classrooms with flexible seating arrangements, and more energy efficient heating and cooling systems. The first two sites, including a combined building for Shabazz City High School and Sherman Middle School, and a new Black Hawk Middle School and Gompers Elementary School Building, will see construction begin in February of next year.

Construction on the remaining schools will occur over two additional phases, concluding in 2029. They include Toki Middle School and Orchard Ridge Elementary School, Sennett Middle School, Cherokee Heights Middle School, Anana Elementary School, and Crestwood Elementary School.
