The Madison School Board on Monday weighed a plan that would double members’ pay and allow their eligibility for district-provided health insurance, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
The plan, which comes 10 years after the board’s last raise, is up for approval at the Sept. 29 board meeting and would provide board members with a base salary of $15,000 per year.
It would also make the seven-member body only the second school board in Wisconsin to become eligible for taxpayer-funded health insurance.
Increasing the current $8,000 pay could spur more people to run for the board, including those who might otherwise not have the financial ability to take off work or attend a school event, board members said.
The compensation plan would also pay the board president an extra $1,200 annually and the board vice president and Instruction and Operations workgroup chairs an additional $600 annually.
Members would also get $100 apiece for attending and participating in half-day board retreats and $200 for full-day retreats.
