The First Student bus company announced Wednesday that MMSD routes will have five new electric school buses, expected to be sent out over the next 18 months, according to WMTV15. The move represents the start of a transition to electric school buses and a step toward the district’s sustainability goals.

The buses, MMSD’s first electric buses, are being funded through almost $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Clean Bus Program, which aims to cover the cost of replacing gasoline-using school buses with zero-emission vehicles.
