Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele is contemplating a wheel tax for all Milwaukee County vehicle registrations as a way to pay for county buses and roadwork, according to a story in the Milwaukee Business Journal, and such a tax could be collected without approval from the Wisconsin Legislature. A tax of $20 per vehicle registration could yield $10.83 million per year; a $40 fee would generate $21.7 million; and $32.59 million would result from a $60 fee. Abele has already ruled out a countywide sales tax, which the public favored in a 2008 referendum.
