The Milwaukee Common Council unanimously approved a six-month moratorium on many new businesses that sell vaping devices, and now the proposal waits for the mayor’s potential signature, according to a report from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
If implemented, the proposal would pause the distribution of occupancy permits to businesses that sell “electronic cigarettes or electronic cigarette paraphernalia,” which are defined as a business:
- That has 10% or more of the establishment’s floor space dedicated to electronic smoking devices or electronic smoking device paraphernalia; or
- With more than 10% of the items it sells consisting of electronic smoking devices or electronic smoking device paraphernalia
While the moratorium is in effect, city leaders can develop regulations for vape shops, including limits on things like how close they can be to schools and child care centers.
