A May 2 rally at the State Capitol advocated for the rights and protections of immigrants and workers, Madison365 reports. Thousands of participants from across Wisconsin gathered as part of a nationwide effort, “A Day Without Immigrants and Workers.”
The Wisconsin effort was organized by Milwaukee nonprofit Voces De La Frontera and included rallies in Milwaukee and Madison on May 1 and 2, respectively. Participants were joined by speakers from the nonprofit organization, elected officials and community members.
Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, Dane County Executive Melissa Agard and Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett affirmed the sanctuary stance of the city of Madison and Dane County. Tina Hinchley, vice president of the Wisconsin Farmers Union, also spoke to the Wisconsin dairy industry’s heavy reliance on immigrant labor and advocated for state-issued driver’s licenses for these workers.
