Mexican restaurant El Águila Real replaced iconic State Street diner Nick’s Restaurant at 226 State St. in August, The Capital Times reports. Nick’s closed last spring after over 60 years in business and served stars like Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Roger Ebert, and Lenny Kravitz.
El Águila Real’s owners, Paulina Venegas Santiago and Ramón López Vasquez, undertook renovations of the restaurant space, including replacing the floor and transforming the diner counter into a bar. The spot’s food and drink offerings include fajitas, chimichangas, cemita sandwiches, margaritas, beer, wine, and mixed drinks.
The restaurant has seen a steady business so far, particularly in the evenings.
