The city of Madison announced on Wednesday that Metro Transit riders are now able to pay their adult rate bus fares with Mastercard or Visa credit cards as well as mobile wallets like Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay.

Using a credit card will provide the same multiple-ride discounts as using an adult Metro Fast Fare single ride at $2, including a 2-hour transfer, and Fare Capping at $5 daily, $16.25 weekly or $65 monthly rates. To receive transfers and discounts, riders need to use the same credit card for fare payment each time they board.

Metro Transit recommends that riders do not hold up a wallet or purse containing both a Fast Fare card and credit card at the same time. The reader will add a charge to the card closest to the reader or show an error message. Switching between cards or virtual payment types will not allow for tracking or applying multiple-ride discounts.

Half-price fares are still under development for credit card payments, and this feature will be available later this summer. Eligible youth, seniors, individuals with disabilities and those with low incomes will continue to receive half-price fares when using their current Fast Fare cards.
