Metro Transit will move to “Fast Fare Cards” later this year, according to the Wisconsin State Journal, dramatically changing how riders pay fares. The move will ultimately allow boarding on all doors of every bus and riders to add money to card accounts in several ways.

Riders will tap the card on a reader when boarding the bus; the system will deduct $2, and those riding multiple times will receive ride discounts or automatic fare capping.

The change will come prior to Metro’s launch of Bus Rapid Transit in the fall. It will not increase fares; pricing is based on the existing fare structure.

The new fare system, costing $4 million, is being funded entirely by a federal grant.
