A mixed-income rental housing development could rise on the former site of Messner Inc. at 1326 E. Washington Ave. in Madison.

The location was first considered for a day center for the homeless but was passed over in favor of the former Chamber of Commerce building at 615 E. Washington Ave. because of its proximity to downtown.

Dane County purchased the Messner property in 2015 and discussions are swirling about transitioning it into housing for people earning just 30% or 50% of the county median income, which is considered very low- to low-income.

Market-rate apartments, retail, or commercial could also fill out the plans.

Dane County Executive Joe Parisi has yet to chime in on the idea, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
