Wisconsin-based Menards was ordered to pay $4.25 million to multiple states after its rebate program was found to use deceptive advertising practices, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.
Wisconsin and nine other states initiated the claim, where it was alleged that the 11% rebate program was deceptively marketed, and that the hardware retailer price gouged during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Menards will have to pay Wisconsin $750,000 and adjust its rebate program to make it friendlier, which it will do by allowing claim submissions for up to a year from the purchase date and possibly offering online submission.
Attorneys general from Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Arizona, Kansas, Nebraska, Michigan, South Dakota and Ohio all collaborated in this suit.
