The city of Madison and Maurer’s Market have signed and executed a lease agreement that will ensure people living in south Madison will still have access to a full-service grocery store in the area for years to come.

The agreement is years in the making. The initial grocer involved in the project informed the city in September 2021 that they would not be able to continue.

Maurer’s agreed to step in as the tenant for the 24,000-square-foot city-owned first-floor grocery condo at 815 Cedar St. in May 2023 and signed the lease on Nov. 18 of this year after needed improvements to the building were agreed upon and funded by the Common Council.

Maurer’s has signed a 15-year lease agreement with the city, with three options to extend the lease of five years each. Maurer estimates that the grocery will be open for business in mid-2025.
