Wall Street defied global trends early today, as world shares fell and oil prices were mixed, according to the Associated Press. Investors braced today for an expected invasion by Israel in the Gaza Strip, and worries about the state of the U.S. economy have undermined recent optimism over the possibility that the Federal Reserve might halt its interest rate hikes.
Futures for the S&P 500 rose 0.2%, and the Dow Jones Industrials gained 0.3%.
U.S. crude oil edged 4 cents higher early today to $87.73 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, was down 10 cents at $90.79 per barrel.
Worries about the war pulled Treasury yields lower, which often happens when investors head for safer investments during times of stress; however, early this morning, the yield on the 10-year Treasury had risen to 4.69% from 4.63% late Friday.
This week will bring more earnings reports, including updates from Tesla and Netflix.
In currency dealings early today, the U.S. dollar slipped to 149.52 Japanese yen from 149.55 yen late Friday.
