Madison’s Police and Fire Commission is seeking a new police chief after former Chief Shon Barnes left this year for a police chief role in Seattle, according to WKOW. Assistant Chief John Paterson was named interim chief as the hiring process gets underway.

The commission is setting a minimum qualifications requirement of five years of leadership experience for all applicants.

“Provided that our last chief of police didn’t last long … we need a person with experience that (is) really going to stick this time,” said Veronica Figueroa Velez, a member of the commission.
