Madison’s oldest bar, the Silver Dollar Tavern, will close after Feb. 3, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The bar, located at 117 W. Mifflin St. near the Capitol Square, opened in 1933 after the lifting of Prohibition.
Chuck Teasdale, the bar’s fourth-generation co-owner, says his great-grandfather, Clyde Teasdale, obtained the city’s first liquor license.
Madison’s Hovde Properties is set to buy the property on Feb. 20, according to Teasdale, as part of the company’s plan to redevelop that part of the block. Teasdale did not give the purchase price, but city property records indicate the land was valued this year at $186,000 with $135,000 in improvements, for a $321,000 total.
The bar has no plans to relocate at this time.
