With the expansion of electric bike stations throughout Madison and surrounding communities, the city’s BCycle ridership is hitting record numbers, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. BCycle launched in Madison in 2011.

The bike-sharing system has 1.5 million recorded total trips since 2022 — roughly the same number of trips over the preceding decade. The company has cited the cheap pricing of bike-share passes for UW students behind the uptick in ridership, which saw the most notable increases in 2023–24.

The system has seen 438,000 trips in 2024 so far. It’s on pace to beat 2023’s record 522,000 trips. BCycle has 90 stations and 500 bikes throughout Madison. It recently added seven new stations and is set to open another on West Main Street.
