Madison’s popular BCycle electric bike-sharing program is changing hands, as Bicycle Transit Systems (BTS) in Philadelphia has announced the acquisition of BCycle from Waterloo-based Trek, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.
The deal, which is set to close next month, encompasses BCycle systems in 25 communities, including Madison, which has 500 bikes at 90 stations. Trek launched BCycle in 2008, adding Madison in 2011, and made history in 2019 when Madison became the first city to switch its entire fleet to electric-assist bikes.
The purchase also includes BCycle systems in cities like Santa Barbara, Nashville, and San Antonio, as well as other non-BCycle-branded systems in Milwaukee, Salt Lake City, and Indianapolis.
