Chef and owner Nathan Mergen announced on Facebook that upscale pub 107 State is now closed in Madison.
“The restaurant business is a tough one,” he said on social media. “We have had our share of challenges. Opening, no one knew we were here. COVID, open with no one around. COVID, people discover us. We opened an art gallery once. Then we were really discovered.”
After people heard more about 107, the restaurant became busy during the second summer of the COVID-19 pandemic. Mergen said the business had several good years before he expanded into Mount Horeb with Bar Manzo, which didn’t work, “creating a cycle of financial catch-up that we were never able to escape.”
Mergen admitted it is a sudden closure, but the last year has been especially tough.
