It might seem an odd move to close ski hills due to cold weather, but downhill ski resorts in the area are doing just that.
“We’ve been holding out hope for the forecast to change, but it’s only changing for the worse,” Cascade Mountain posted to Facebook, announcing its Friday closure.
The windchill also closed the Portage ski hill on Jan. 19.
Devil’s Head Resort in Merrimac also announced its Friday closure, but expects to be open on Saturday, unless the temperatures change.
Mount Horeb’s Tyrol Basin is also closed Friday, open on Saturday from 12-9 p.m. and back to normal hours on Sunday, weather permitting.
An extreme cold warning from the National Weather Service is in effect in the Madison area until 1 p.m.
