The Madison Metropolitan School District will break ground soon on 10 schools across the district, according to a Wisconsin Public Radio report.
Voters passed a $507 million referendum last year to fund 10 schools in the district, including new buildings for five middle schools, two elementary schools and one alternative high school.
The schools were chosen because of failing plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems. None of the schools has air conditioning and some have asbestos.
Construction will begin in March on two new buildings for Samuel Gompers Elementary School/Black Hawk Middle School and Sherman Middle School/Shabazz City High School.
In summer 2027, the existing schools will be demolished for new green spaces, parking and playgrounds.
Work should be done in time for the 2027-2028 school year.
The district recently finished renovations of its four main high schools, after passing a $317 million facilities referendum in 2020.
