The Madison School Board approved a $165,500 contract for a compensation study on Monday, the Cap Times reports.

The decision comes from calls from teachers union Madison Teachers Inc. to address salary compression for veteran teachers. The union said the pay scale at the Madison Metropolitan School District does not fairly compensate veteran teachers.

Florida-based consulting firm Evergreen Solutions was hired by MMSD to conduct a study of nearly 4,500 employee salaries beginning in February.

The project will run until the end of June and will “ensure the district’s compensation practices are internally equitable, externally competitive and align with modern job market standards,” according to a memo to the School Board.
