CommercialCafe’s newest study analyzed the performances of the top 20 Midwestern metros for tech workers and businesses, examining nine metrics — including tech job density, median earnings, and quality of life. Madison ranked first among the 20 best Midwestern metro areas for tech development, with key findings that include:

  • The metro ranked first in tech employment density, with 69 out of every 1,000 active firms in Madison belonging to the tech sector. In comparison, Milwaukee’s ratio was 37 tech businesses to 1,000 firms, and Appleton’s was 27 to 1,000 firms.

  • Madison earned the third-highest place for tech establishment density, with roughly 30 of every 1,000 firms registered within the metropolitan area falling under the tech category. Meanwhile, Milwaukee has a ratio of 18 tech businesses to 1,000 firms, and 13 of every 1,000 Appleton firms operate in the tech industry.

  • Madison median tech earnings have witnessed a 21% growth from 2019 to 2023, reaching $87,928 per year.

  • With 599 tech patents approved in Madison between 2020 and 2024, the Wisconsin metro saw contributions from 96 different companies during this period.
