In a study by STORAGECafé comparing the nation’s 100 largest cities, Madison ranked as the 12th best city for leading an active lifestyle. The analysis was based on a weighted index of 18 key indicators such as venues for exercising, walkability, bike-friendliness, and natural conditions. Key findings include: 

  • Madison residents are health-conscious, with 81% of adults physically active; 
  • Madison ranks as the 11th best city for bikeability, with 3.9% of its population biking to work; 
  • Madison ranks 12th for walkability, with 10% of its population walking to work, more than triple the national average; and  
  • The city ranks 33rd for gyms and there are 2.8 gyms for 10,000 people — more than double the national average — and an average membership fee of $54.
