Madison ranked No. 2 midsized metro for STEM professionals

Madison is the second-best midsized metro where STEM professionals like AI developers, scientists and engineers can find opportunities and wages, according to a new study from CoworkingCafe.

The study evaluated cities based on metrics such as STEM job availability, average income and unemployment rate and sourced its data from the Census Bureau and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Metros were divided into three population categories: large (1 million residents or more), midsized (500,000 to 999,000 residents) and small (200,000 to 499,000 residents).

Key findings included: 

  • The Madison area has the fourth-highest share of science-related jobs, with over 17% of jobs being located within the 495 local STEM establishments;

  • Between 2019 and 2024, Madison recorded a surge of almost 32% in STEM jobs, the 14th-highest growth among midsized metros; 

  • Madison offers the lowest unemployment rate among working-age adults with a BA (1.1%) and the 10th-highest income to STEM professionals, with their annual median wage surpassing $102,600 after an increase of over 19% in the last five years; and

  • Madison has the third-highest density of doctorates, with 88 PhDs per 100,000 residents.
