A recent study from CommercialCafe compared the top mid-sized U.S. cities for green commuters, ranking them against a series of key metrics such as the popularity of public transit systems; the prevalence of pedestrian and bicycle commuters; green infrastructure, such as parks and trees; carpooling initiatives; and the density of electric vehicle charging stations. The analysis provides insights into cities with populations ranging from 220,000 to 500,000 that stand out in their adoption and performance of sustainable commuting.
Madison ranked second among the top 30 mid-sized U.S. cities for green commuting with a total of 51.9 points.
Study highlights include:
- Madison had the highest share of workers who cycle to work, with 2.6% of the city’s workers commuting by bike;
- The city also had the second-highest share of parks per 10,000 residents, with roughly 10; and
- Madison placed third on the list for its share of workers walking to work, with 8.3% of the city’s workers commuting this way.
