The Madison Public Market is facing further delays, according to the Wisconsin State Journal. The Madison Public Market Foundation said that initial plans to open this fall have been pushed back due to delays in “lease finalization and necessary building improvements to meet public health standards for food vendors.”

Work on the market at 202 N. First St. on Madison’s east side has been underway since late 2023 after a multi-year holdup resulting from a lack of sufficient funding. Construction delays had already pushed back the market’s planned opening this summer.

The foundation said that it is now aiming to begin tenant construction this fall, followed by a grant opening in early 2026. In the meantime, it will offer food tasting, pop-ups and other opportunities to introduce vendors to the community.

When it’s completed, the nearly $24 million Madison Public Market will offer 31 permanent merchant booths as well as temporary spaces for vendors during pop-ups and events.
