Plans are underway to transform the former city of Madison fleet services building, at 200 N. First St., into a public market that could host 30 vendors, a brewpub, and a restaurant, according to a story from the Wisconsin State Journal. The 45,000-square-foot project is likely to open in early 2024. The city will request bids for the project this summer and renovation will begin in November. In early 2023, an executive director for the 45,000-square-foot market will be hired, which will allow for the selection of food and retail businesses. The project received $4 million in funding from a program that uses federal COVID-19 relief funds. More than 200 businesses have already expressed interest in being involved in the market, which could serve 500,000 customers a year.
