According to the Wisconsin State Journal, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes will not serve as Chicago’s next top cop; instead, Chicago Police Counterterrorism head Larry Snelling was selected for the job.
Barnes, Snelling, and another current Chicago police official, Angel Novalez, were named finalists from a list of five semi-finalists in mid-July. If Barnes had left Madison, the city would have been faced with finding its fourth police chief in 10 years.
Despite aspirations to lead the Chicago police, Barnes had previously stated his intention to stay in Madison for “the long haul.” He continues to have ties to Chicago, where he led the city’s Civilian Office of Police Accountability for a year before taking Madison’s chief role.
