City workers willing to walk, take a bus, or ride a bike to work could be paid for their efforts, according to a story in TheCapital Times. The Sustainable Madison Committee is raising the idea of reimbursing city employees for giving up their parking spots downtown and taking other modes of transportation, allowing the city to collect parking fees for the spots at market rate. It’s an idea that’s been adopted elsewhere, including Chicago, Portland, and San Francisco. The idea has been proposed in Madison before, but committee members think it may have legs this time around, especially with bicycle commuting gaining favor.
