Madison jumps in Milken ranking

The 2017 Milken Institute index of the country’s best-performing cities shows Madison moving up 18 spots to number 58 (76 in 2016) among large cities.

Milken has been publishing this index since 1999, using nine categories to measure how well the metropolitan areas are at creating and sustaining jobs and economic growth. The components include job, wage and salary, and technology growth. Provo-Orem, Utah, topped the 2017 list.

Among Milken’s index of small cities, Bend-Redmond, Ore. earned the top rank.

Among Wisconsin cities, Appleton jumped 26 spots to 54 and Sheboygan came in at 108, up 19 spots from 2016. Meanwhile, Wausau fell 23 spots to 80, and Racine dropped 21 spots to 154.
