Madison has the 5th fewest minority business owners in U.S.

A new report from Smartest Dollar looking at minority business ownership in the U.S. found that in the Madison metro area, the ratio of minority businesses to the minority population share is 0.26, compared to 0.47 at the national level. Out of all midsize U.S. metros, Madison has the fifth lowest ratio of minority businesses to minority population share. Minority business enterprises have accounted for more than half of the new businesses created in the U.S. over the last decade, creating 4.7 million jobs in the process. However, nearly four out of five employer firms in the U.S. are owned by people identifying as non-Hispanic white, while only 19% of businesses are owned by minorities.
