The city of Madison announced Tuesday that it’s finalized an agreement to open a Mauer’s Urban Market at the corner of South Park Street and Cedar Street.

The 24,000-square-foot, full-service store will offer daily staples, plus a large selection of meat and seafood as well as a deli and bakery.

The city reports that the south side of Madison hasn’t been without a grocery store for over 60 years, but an existing Pick ‘N Save store next door is slated to close by the end of the year amid a redevelopment of the area, which would leave the south side in a food desert. Solving that problem has been a “long-time priority” for many Madison officials.

The store will be the commercial tenant of a $42 million, six-story redevelopment, and it will be leased out for 15 years with several renewal options.
