The Madison Community Foundation has awarded local nonprofit Literacy Network an $80,000 Community Impact grant for its English for Citizenship Program.
Each year, approximately 120 Lawful Permanent Residents eligible to naturalize participate in Literacy Network’s Citizenship Program, which provides group classes and one-on-one tutoring.
In 2025, the federal government terminated Literacy Network’s multi-year federal grant. MCF’s funding helps sustain the programming.
“MCF sees the Literacy Network’s Citizenship Program as an important investment in the Greater Madison community,” Angela Davis, MCF’s director of grantmaking, said in a statement. “By providing support to eligible LPRs preparing for U.S. citizenship through targeted language instruction, civics education, naturalization and interview preparation, they are making citizenship attainable, providing a sense of belonging to people in our community who are working toward becoming U.S. citizens.”
In 2025, the Literacy Network supported a record 71 students in passing their citizenship test. More than 13,000 people in the Madison metropolitan area are eligible for citizenship.
