Verona-based World Wide World has sued Milestone Democratic School for allegedly breaking its contract and not paying months of rent and utility bills for a Fitchburg property, according to a report from Wisconsin State Journal. The school touts itself as a place where students can create their curriculum and have control over school design and function. The former landlord for Milestone says the school ended its 33-month lease for that space early, failed to pay for occupancy and utility service, and has left World Wide World unable to re-lease more than a third of the space.
Milestone rented the property but never conducted school there. The school states it canceled its lease after determining it would be cost prohibitive to bring the building up to code for use as a school. World Wide World says Milestone signed a lease for 9,600 square feet of space at 2823 Index Road in Fitchburg for the period from Dec. 1, 2019 to Aug. 21, 2022, but the school’s board of directors terminated it on June 2, 2020.
